The City of Newton in conjunction with Jasper County Schools applied for the Illinois Safe Routes to Schools Grant. The Illinois Safe Route to Schools Grant gives communities the opportunity to receive state funding to institute local projects that will help boost the health and safety of children by making walking and biking to school safer and more accessible. In the application, the City of Newton listed the enhancement of infrastructure (sidewalks) and the education of students regarding the important aspects of walking and biking safely around town as the two main areas of focus.
The grant will fund a temporary “Safety City” on Newton Elementary School’s blacktop. The grant will allow school personnel, crossing guards and first responders to teach students how to walk and bike using sidewalks while providing a safe environment. All participants at the event will be entered into a raffle for bicycles, scooters and safety equipment. This event will be held on October 22, 2024 at Newton Elementary School from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
A form to register for this night was sent home today with your child.
Reminder! We will have 2 hour early dismissal on Friday, October 4th due to homecoming.
