Meetings

The Board of Education normally holds regular monthly meetings, open to the public on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the District Board of Education office at 1401 Clayton Avenue in Newton.

All school board meetings, work sessions and committee meetings are open to the public in accordance with the Open Meetings Act except for specific sessions called “closed session” to discuss matters that are legally closed.

Citizens have the opportunity to address the Board of Education during public comments. Per Board policy 2:230 Public Participation at School Board Meetings and Petitions to the Board, citizens addressing the Board are asked to identify him or herself and be brief. Ordinarily, such comments shall be limited to 2 minutes. In unusual circumstances, a person may be allowed to speak for more than 2 minutes. A person who gives advance notice to the Superintendent one week before the meeting may be allowed to speak for 5 minutes. Petitions or written correspondence to the Board shall be presented to the Board in the next regular Board packet.

The Superintendent is appointed by the School Board and has administrative authority for the direction and operation of the school system under policies adopted by the School Board.
